Allen Lowe is a saxophonist, composer and music historian who has led bands and recorded with Julius Hemphill, David Murray, Roswell Rudd, JD Allen, Marc Ribot and others. He has lectured at Jazz at Lincoln Center on jazz history. Anthony Braxton has said "Allen Lowe is one of the few musicians today doing anything new. He IS the tradition." John Szwed has called him "a genius" and has compared his musical stature to James Joyce.
