Firehouse 12 is pleased to present composer and cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and his Sextet as they celebrate the release of the new album The Ambiguity Manifesto on Firehouse 12 Records. Kevin Whitehead of NPR recently wrote "Taylor Ho Bynum compares his composing [on The Ambiguity Manifesto] to designing a playground for improvisers, with different activity zones, but no set rules. That's an apt metaphor. All that play makes for serious fun".
Critics have called Bynum "a young brass master and compelling composer" (Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix), "one of the most exciting figures in jazz’s new power generation" (Steve Dollar, Time Out Chicago), and "one of his generation’s top avant-garde figures" (Phillip Lutz, The New York Times). In City Arts, David Adler writes "Bynum is a quick-witted and virtuosic player, steeped in the flutters, growls and extended techniques associated with the late Bill Dixon, the tunefulness of Don Cherry and bluesy humor of Lester Bowie."
Bynum is the leader and co-leader of a number of ensembles in addition to his sextet including his long-running duo with drummer Tomas Fujiwara, Illegal Crowns (with Fujiwara, Mary Halvorson, and Benoit Delbecq) and Geometry (with Kyoko Kitamura, Tomeka Reid, and Joe Morris). Bynum’s two decades of work with Anthony Braxton is recognized as one of the most generative partnerships of that legendary composer’s career, with projects ranging from duos to orchestras and everything in between. During Bynum’s stewardship of the Tri-Centric Foundation (which he served as executive director from 2010-2018), he produced many major Braxton projects, including two massive Trillium operas, two immersive Sonic Genome performances, and multiple festivals. Bynum is currently the director of the jazz and creative music ensemble at Dartmouth College and he is also a founding partner of Firehouse 12 Records.
