Allen Lowe and the Fake Music Ensemble

Saxophonist and composer Allen Lowe will perform his suite entitled Black, Brown, and Beige, Yellow, Trans, and Queer: My Country 'Tis of This which is a response to the current political situation in the USA and the question of what it means to be American.Songs composed include references to the gay scene in Harlem of the 1920s, early African American street entrepreneurs; jazz figures like Bud Powell and Charles Mingus, Jaki Byard and Pete Brown; the writers Zora Neale Hurston and Chester Himes; Lenny Bruce; and transsexual pioneer Christine Jorgensen. Performers include saxophonists Nicole Glover and Lisa Parrott, trombonist Brian Simontacchi, pianist Lewis Porter, bassist Hilliard Greene, and drummer Rob Landis.

Allen Lowe is a saxophonist, composer, and music historian. He has performed and recorded as a leader with David Murray, Doc Cheatham, Hamiet Bluiett, Marc Ribot, Matthew Shipp, Don Byron, Julius Hemphill, Nels Cline, Ken Peplowski, JD Allen, Ursula Oppens Roswell Rudd, and Jimmy Knepper. He has released at least 15 compact discs under his own name. He is currently a lecturer at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and is teaching an upcoming course there on the History of the Blues.
