Laura Ann Singh Fracas Quintet

  • Firehouse 12 45 Crown Street New Haven CT 06510 (map)

Laura Ann Singh (voice), Adam Hopkins (bass), Scott Clark (drums), John Lilley (saxophone), Bob Miller (trumpet)

Laura Ann Singh (Miramar, Tomeka Reid) leads Fracas Quintet: a foray into the place where song, abstraction, and collective improvisation meet. These five distinctive improvisers move freely between composed material and open form, arranging melody, text, texture and noise into moments that range from intimate to unruly.

Singh's debut record as leader (October 2025, Out of Your Head Records) captures a band unafraid to test the edges of genre. Drawing on Singh's background in song and the ensemble's deep improvisational vocabulary, Fracas makes music that is lyrical, compelling, restless and, above all, alive.

Laura Ann Singh is a vocalist, songwriter, and multilingual interpreter of song whose work bridges multiple genres. The Guardian has described her as a “distinctive new voice in jazz,” a quality that underpins her wide-ranging artistic practice. She is a founding member of Miramar, with whom she has appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk. Her collaborative work includes performances with cellist and composer Tomeka Reid, jazz arranger Doug Richards, trumpeter and composer John D’earth. Her recorded output includes releases on Daptone, Barbès, Ansonia, and Out of Your Head Records, as well as numerous independent projects. Singh’s repertoire draws deeply from Brazil and Latin America while also engaging the American Songbook, women composers, experimental music, and her own original work, reflecting a practice rooted in both interpretive depth and creative exploration.
