Pianist and composer Angelica Sanchez returns to Firehouse 12 for the first time as a leader since 2007, presenting new music for a nine-piece group. A constant on the New York improvised music scene since the late '90s, Sanchez has been developing the music for this project since 2016. While some of the material began as charts for a standard 18-piece big band, most was composed with the specific personnel of the group in mind. This evening at Firehouse 12 will culminate a short tour of venues on the east coast and as with many of the shows at Firehouse 12, this performance will be recorded. Sanchez intends to use the Firehouse recording as an official release documenting the project.
Writing in the New York Times, Nate Chinen said Sanchez "likes building structures and breaking free of them" and Bill Milkowski wrote in JazzTimes about her "fully realized debut - full of Cecil Taylor-esque pyrotechnics and showcasing a flair for counterpoint, evocative harmonies and open-ended form - mark[ing] her as a formidable talent." Sanchez has also been selected to program a week at John Zorn's renowned venue The Stone in New York's East Village. She performed for a week in March 2016 and will return this November to present a variety of her smaller group projects.
