Firehouse 12 is very pleased to present saxophonist James Brandon Lewis on October 19, in his debut on the Jazz Concert Series. Born in Buffalo NY, Lewis recruited the Washington DC based rhythm section of bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Warren Trae Crudup III for this group. Together, their free improvisations in a funk idiom wed Coltrane and Band of Gypsies-era Hendrix, with a nod to major jazz-and-groove exemplars in the meanwhile, from Ornette Coleman's Prime Time bands to A Tribe Called Quest. This concert will draw on music from the trio's 2016 release No Filter.

Jazzwise writes, "No Filter unveils a raw, rugged, uncut and uncompromising aesthetic, and that is exactly what the players deliver. The sheer hardness of their attack has the front row initially leaning back, eyebrows raised and then heads nodding in hypnosis when the full force of the music really starts to kick in." The New York Times characterized Lewis' style as "raw-toned but measured"

A powerful younger voice on the tenor saxophone, James Brandon Lewis is acclaimed for his work alongside such artists as William Parker and Darius Jones, and has performed and recorded with a long list of jazz luminaries, including Hamiet Bluiett, Hamid Drake, Ravi Coltrane, Jimmy Heath, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman and others.
