Boris Kozlov

bass

Boris was born on 12.05.67 in Moscow, USSR to a family of engineers. In 1975 he started playing piano at the Evening Music School. He played tuba and trumpet in public school band. In 1983 he joined the State Musical College on
electric bass. He picked up acoustic bass while in College and graduated in 1987 with a Diploma of Honor. In 1987-89 he served in the Soviet Army playing horns and bass. In 1989 he was hired by the Melodia Studio Ensemble with whom he proceeded to record more than 40 albums on acoustic and electric
bass.

In 1989-1991 Boris studied at the State Academy of Music while touring USSR, Europe and USA with various jazz groups including his own. At the first USSR Competition of Jazz Soloists in 1990 he won First Prize as well as a special
prize for composition. After winning the first spot in the Young Musician category in USSR Jazz Journal in 1991, Boris moved to New York. While there he has performed, recorded and toured with:

Petrucciani, Stanley Cowell, Jon Ballantyne, Jean-Michel Pilc, Orrin Evans, Edward Simon; vibraphonists Terry Gibbs, Joe Locke, Dave Samuels; guitarist Mark Whitfield; drummers Tommy Campbell, Victor Jones, Marlon Simon, Victor Lewis, Jonathan Blake, Ali Jackson; clarinetist Buddy De Franco; violinist John Blake; vocalists Jay Mc Govern, Urszula Dudziak,
Monday Michiru; trombonist/vocalist Frank Lacy's Vibe Tribe, as well as funk jazz bands NewHypeJazz and his own BEA.

Boris is also the regular bassist of the Mingus Orchestra, Mingus Dynasty and Mingus Big Band (voted best big band by "Downbeat" every year since 1995 until now. Since 1998 he has been playing Charles Mingus' bass as well being an arranger and Musical Director for the Mingus Big Band. While in New York Boris took interest and studied Afro-Cuban music and later
on gained experience in the field playing with Bobby Sanabria's "Ascension", and since 2000 with Ray Barretto's " New World Spirit. In 1999 he was sent to represent the USA in the Centennial Ellington Orchestra assembled by the European Broadcast Union.
