Peter Brötzmann, musician, visual artist and producer was born and raised in Germany. He is an accomplished painter who was trained at the art academy in Wuppertal. Self-taught on clarinets, he soon moved to saxophones and began playing swing/bebop before meeting Peter Kowald and has performed, recorded and collaborated with jazz virtuosos such as Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Steve Lacy, Alex von Schlippenbach, Manfred Schoof, Sven-Ake Johansson, Jost Geberts, Willem Breuker, Hank Bennink, Fred Van Hove, Harry Miller, Louis Moholo, Derek Bailey, Cecil Taylor, Evan Parker, Keiji Haino, Misha Mengelberg, Anthony Braxton, Marilyn Crispell, Andrew Cyrille, Phil Minton, Tony Oxley, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Sonny Sharock and Bill Laswell, Ruf der Heimat, Borah Bergman, Hamid Drake, William Parker, Toshinori Kondo, Mats Gustafsson, Michael Zerang, Kent Kessler, Fred Lomberg-Holm, Ken Vandermark , Mars Williams, Jeb Bishop, Joe Mac Phee, Caspar Brötzmann, Conny Bauer.

Brötzmann has performed in various capacities throughout the USA, Canada, Japan, North-Africa and Europe. With an amazing knowledge of free jazz and improvised music he has released numerous albums and articles on the value of creativity and displays his paintings in art galleries.

Brötzmann is among the most important European free jazz musicians. His rough, lyrical timbre is easily recognized on his many recordings.
