Performer's Website

Stephen Haynes is a composer, arts advocate and educator; a product of the historic and fertile Black Music Division at Bennington College, directed by Bill Dixon. His early foundational studies were with the wonderful Frank Baird, who chaired the brass department at the University of Colorado's Boulder campus during the sixties and seventies. Mr. Haynes current focus is the development of his own music for a varity of ensembles ranging from duo to sextet. He is a charter member of Cecil Taylor's AHA! Orchestra and serve on the boards of directors for Y'All of New York and Chamber Music Plus Northeast. Mr. Haynes is very concerned with the plight of the local artist in his/her hometown and region, and with the importance of well-developed support for those of us who enjoy working close to home and being treated properly. Over the years he has worked with a range of musicians, with a primary interest in large ensembles and composition: George Russell, LaMonte Young, Butch Morris, Rhys Chatham, Bill Dixon, Leroy Jenkins, JD Parran and Borah Bergman.

Stephen was a composer in residence for the 2004-05 year at Real Art Ways in Hartford. His page there can be accessed here.
