Described as a “trio in expansion”, the Michael Attias Quintet combines the freewheeling elasticity and swing of a small improvising unit with the big sound and tightly scripted, multi-layered long forms of Attias’ larger groups. Notated sections flow in and out of spontaneously generated sub-groups; forms dissolve and reappear in ever-renewed shapes and time-feels; transitions between pieces become pieces in themselves. Each performance is a unique and unrepeatable journey and each player an equal agent of power and change in directing the dream-flow. Their first album soon to be released on Clean Feed, was recorded over three nights at the Coimbra Jazz Festival in June 08. Entitled Twines of Colesion, it sings the song of a very special and risky sort of molecular paradise. Tonight replacing Tony Malaby and Russ Lossing, we welcome special guests Mark Taylor and Jacob Sacks.
