Schrift is Chris Cretella (guitar/compositions), Zach Rowden (bass), and Dave Parmelee (drums). Dave and I (Chris) have been playing together for a very long time. Zach and I haven’t been playing together for as long as Dave and I but for all intents purposes we may as well have been. Zach and Dave have only played together in this configuration and that time could be measured in hours. The same could be said of the unit as a whole. The music was composed and orchestrated for the people more so than it was for the instruments.

That brings us to the composition pertinent to the evening’s program. It was written in the spring of 2016. After years of rigorously mapping out pieces, and admittedly taking way too long to get them together, I decided to go back to a more rock and roll approach and write what I played more than what I thought up. I wanted to take this group of players and give them material whose pitch and shape was somewhat tightly controlled yet give those players the opportunity to utilize that material as best they saw fit while leaving open the possibility for the music to go where it needed to go within the framework that was provided. I wrote this piece for Zach and Dave because a.) I wanted to have an excuse to get them to play together and b.) they are both good friends. I knew that they would not only be able to do amazing things with the material that I had written but that the hang would be just as fun as the music. The composition has three working titles to date. The sort of serious conceptual title Theater or Factory, the inside joke title Higher and Drier, and the one that brought the most laughs, Better than Def Leppard. In a way, the multiple titles, and the level at which they function are indicative of the various ways in which the piece can operate at any given moment.
