Bassist John Hébert is no stranger to the New York jazz scene. He was named the winner in the 2011 Downbeat Critic’s Poll Rising Star Acoustic Bassist category and his first album as a leader, Byzantine Monkey (Firehouse 12) was also awarded 4 stars in Downbeat and has been praised for its unique compositional style, “borrowing from the tradition, revering it even, yet using it to create a totally modern vision on composition and sound.” (Free Jazz-Stef 2009)

In 2015, John released his fourth record as a leader, Rambling Confessions (Sunnyside) to much praise. Downbeat awarded the record 4 1/2 stars stating “Hébert exhibits Zen-like patience, incredible ears and strong convictions as an improviser” (Milkowski 2015). Jazz Times has similar praise, “thinking outside the box, Hébert’s interpretation of Cat Power’s “Fool” benefits from the bassist’s double
stops, while Jen Shyu makes the unique lyrics unfold like an improvisational poem.” (Shanley Jazz Times 2015)

Tonight he brings in a quartet that was first formed as a nod to jazz vocalist, Carmen McRae. After numerous performances the quartet has developed into a highly individual exploration of originals and standards.
