Mario Pavone : bass

Tyshawn Sorey : drums

On Friday, June 3rd, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present bassist Mario Pavone and his celebrated trio featuring pianist Matt Mitchell and percussionist Tyshawn Sorey. Pavone's most recent release with this group is

Pavone’s music has been called “toe-tapping, misty-swirling, percolating, mind-bending” (Nils Jacobson, All About Jazz) and “never been less than compelling” (Ben Ratliff, New York Times). Dave Lynch of All Music Guide wrote Pavone’s music “should hold appeal for listeners of both inside and outside persuasions.” Of this group, Mark Corroto of All About Jazz wrote "Pavone's strength seems to be his knack for assembling sympathetic groups that just seem to blend together to create challenging and engaging music. It is scary to think what this band would sound like if they played together every night."

Bassist/composer Mario Pavone has collaborated with both legendary innovators and today's most respected young musicians to consistently define the cutting edge of jazz for the past 40 years. He has anchored the trios of Paul Bley, Bill Dixon, Thomas Chapin, and co-led a variety of notable ensembles with Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Marty Ehrlich, and Michael Musillami. Unlike most artists whose careers span five decades, his most recent recordings are his most widely acclaimed, appearing on best-of-the-year lists from Slate, AllAboutJazz, Coda, the Village Voice, and The New York Times among others.
