On Friday, March 25th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi and his critically-acclaimed group Baida featuring Gary Versace, Drew Gress, and Nasheet Waits as they celebrate the release of their new album Quiver on ECM Records which is a follow-up to the much lauded 2013 release Baida on ECM.
Alessi's music has been called "a beautifully coherent statement, not just his most accomplished album but a contender for one of this year's best" (Nate Chinen, JazzTimes) and "sounds eerily like the mid-60s MIles Davis quintet reinvented as a shyly slinky, contemporary-cool-jazz tribute" (John Fordham, The Guardian). Alessi has "drop-dead trumpet chops and his music is as clean and airy and sophisticated and disciplined as post-modern progressive jazz gets" (JazzTimes).
Alessi is originally from San Francisco, CA. His father was a classical trumpeter and his mother an opera singer. He has studied and collaborated with Charlie Haden, Steve Coleman, Jason Moran, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, Fred hersch, and many others. He has ten albums of original material which range from post-bop to neo-classical music. Alessi is a the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music and on the faculty of New York University and New England Conservatory.
