On Friday, March 18th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present Chicago-based cellist and composer Tomeka Reid in her first performance at Firehouse 12. She will be joined by Firehouse 12 regulars guitarist Mary Halvorson and percussionist Tomas Fujiwara along with Chicago bassist Jason Roebke to celebrate the release of their eponymous debut album Tomeka Reid Quartet (Thirty Ear Records).

Reid has been called "one of the great energies of the past year in jazz; a melodic improviser with a natural, flowing sense of song" (Nate Chine, New York Times). Her playing is "explosive and expressive, plucking it like an upright bass and then bowing legato passages you'd expect from a chamber orchestra" (John Vettese, The Key - Philadelphia). Her debut album was called "stellar…[it] showcases her improvisational mettle, memorable writing and keen arrangements as well as magnanimous leadership abilities" (Troy Collins, All About Jazz).

Reid is a Chicago-based cellist, composer, and educator who is equally aept in classical and jazz contexts. She is an integral part of Dee Alexander's Evolution Ensemble, Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble/Strings, Mike Reed's Loose Assembly, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) Great Black Music Ensemble, and co-leads the internationally recognized string trio, Hear in Now.
