On Friday, October 3rd, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome back guitarist/composer Michael Musillami and his trio featuring Joe Fonda on bass and George Schuller on drums, with Kris Davis performing on piano. This group will be celebrating the recent release of their new album Pride (Playscape Recordings).
Critics have called Musillami “a refreshingly swinging outcat” (Jim Macnie, Downbeat) who “commands attention, not with force but with sophistication and understatement” (Bill Donaldson, Cadence) and “stands out in the crowded field of jazz guitarists for his ability to synthesize different traditions into a personal style” (Ed Hazell, Boston Phoenix). The "trio creates energy and feeds off the same and the effect is to broaden the scope of improvisation. Pride is engaging on every level and a major achievement for Musillami (Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz).
Musillami's career spans more than 25 years and includes extensive work as a performer, bandleader/composer and educator. In addition to his trio, which has performed across Europe and North America and released five other recordings since 2002, he has earned international acclaim as the leader of groups ranging from duo to octet. When not working with his own bands, he also directs the student jazz ensemble Right Brain Logic at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, and manages Playscape Recordings, the highly regarded independent label he founded in 1999.
