On December 13th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present bassist/composer Mark Dresser and his quintet as they celebrate the release of their new album Nourishments (Clean Feed Records). Dresser has previously performed at Firehouse 12 with the collaborative groups Trio M (with Myra Melford, and Matt Wilson), with the Mauger Trio (with Rudresh Mahannthappa and Gerry Hemingway) and with Jane Ira Bloom.
"Challenging and joyful, 'Nourishments' embraces tradition while extending it, and balance precise compositional deliberation with effusive improvisation" (Robert Bush, All About Jazz). "[The album] is an emphatic musical statement from a seasoned bandleader, returning to the front of a traditional quintet" (Steve Mossberg, Arts Fuse Boston) and "a perfect combination of strong writing and unique musicianship, and for that reason it should not be overlooked" (Mike Shanley, Jazz Times).
At the core of Dresser's music is an artistic obsession and commitment to expanding the sonic and musical possibilities of the double bass through the use of unconventional amplification and extended techniques. He has worked with a wide range of artists in improvised and new music including Anthony Braxton, Joe Lovano, John Zorn, and James Newton. His solo works include the DVD/CD/booklet triptych Guts: Bass Explorations, Investigations, and Explanations (2010) and CDs UNVEIL (2006) and Invocation (1994) feature the music evolving out of this research. A chapter on his extended techniques, “A Personal Pedagogy,” appears in the book, ARCANA (Granary Press).
