On November 22nd, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome back vibraphonist and composer Chris Dingman as he presents a new suite of music commissioned by Chamber Music America called The Subliminal and the Sublime. The new suite is Dingman's follow-up to his critically acclaimed suite Waking Dreams which he performed at Firehouse 12 in 2010.
Dingman has been called "an extremely gifted young composer, bandleader, recording artist, and much sought-after sideman. A true virtuoso on the vibes" (Jon Weber, NPR). His last album Waking Dreams was called "beautifully rendered and thoroughly accessible...a work of art and form. To bring ideas into fruition - let alone ones from dreams - into music that's articulated at this level, is something to admire" (Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz).
Dingman grew up in San Jose, California and began piano and percussion studies at an early age. He attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and received a B.A. with honors in music. There he studied with vibraphonist Jay Hoggard, drummer Pheeroan AkLaff, composer Anthony Braxton, and mridangist David Nelson. In 2005, he was one of only seven musicians selected to participate in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at the University of Southern California. He is now based in Brooklyn, NY and his working with many leading lights on the jazz and creative music scene.
The Subliminal and the Sublime is created with support from Chamber Music America's Commissioning and Ensemble Development program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Foundation.
