On November 8th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome back saxophonist and composer MichaŽl Attias and his quintet. They will perform music from last year's well received Spun Tree (Clean Feed Records). The music on Spun Tree features eight new compositions. There are four large-scale pieces and four simple pieces that balance size and density with space, rhythmic agility, and ensemble interplay. The quintet features trumpeter Ralph Alessi, pianist Kris Davis, bassist Sean Conly, and drummer Tom Rainey.
"Serpentine and darkly alluring, the melodies of Spun Tree are fit to charm snakes...This is music for the mind and the body, made by master musicians" (Bradley Bamberger, Sound It Out). Attias' quintet "skirts between introspection, aggression, and fiercely driven free bop atop the ever-present avant-garde contingent. No particular slant or proposition dominates" (Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz). Their "sense of space, openness, and just plain balance has to be heard to be believed" (Tom Burris, Free Jazz Blog).
Attias has collaborated with visionary performer/composers Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian, Oliver lake, and Anthony Coleman. He has recorded with musicians like Tony Malaby, Nasheet Waits, Taylor Ho Bynum, Satoshi Takeishi and many others. In addition to his work for improvised ensembles, Attias has established himself as a creator of live musical scores and sound design for theatre including two works presented at the Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, Notes from the Underground and more recently In a Year With Thirteen Moons.
