On Friday, June 14th, Firehouse 12 will close the Spring 2013 Jazz Series by welcoming back percussionist/composer Ches Smith and his group These Arches as they celebrate the release of their new album Hammered (Clean Feed Records). This special version of the group will feature bassist Devin Hoff (an original member of the band), guitarist Mary Halvorson, accordionist Andrea Parkins, and saxophonist Tim Berne.
Smith has been called a "player who knows how to exude power and momentum without resorting to showy technique or bombast" (Jason Bivins, Dusted Magazine). Smith's Hammered is "breathtaking for its expansiveness and adventurism" (Dave Sumner, Bird is the Worm) whose sounds "collide and coalesce, blurring the music lines between improvisational and not-so-mainstream music" (Mark F. Turner, All About Jazz).
A native of California, Smith relocated to Brooklyn a few years ago from the Bay Area, where he studied with Fred Frith and Pauline Oliveros among others at the graduate program at Mills College in Oakland. He has since become a member of such ensembles as Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, the Terry Riley Quartet, John Tchicai's Six Points and Mary Halvorson's trio and quintet. His eclectic résumé also includes collaborations with such notable improvisers as Ben Goldberg, Mark Helias, Jenny Scheinman, Todd Sickafoose, Wadada Leo Smith and John Zorn. Smith also performs and records with the doom metal/jazz hybrid Good for Cows, the avant-rock group Secret Chiefs 3 and the experimental pop band Xiu Xiu.
