On Friday, June 7th, pianist/composer Amina Figarova will make her Firehouse 12 debut when she and her sextet come to New Haven to celebrate the release of their new album Twelve (In + Out Records). The group features Bart Platteau (flute), Joe Sanders (bass), Josh Evans (trumpet), Justin Brown (drums), and Marc Mommaas (saxophone).
Figarova's sextet "produces a group sound that is unique and identifiable...highly nuanced, delicately calibrated, buoyed by a resiliently nimble rhythm team and tonally homogenous blend of flute with sax and trumpet that often creates an impression of a mellifluous ensemble section rather than three disparate instruments" (George Kanzler, NYC Jazz Record). Ken Dryden of All Music Guide wrote that with Twelve "Figarova makes her case as an important composer of her generation."
Figarova was born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan. In addition to her collaboration with her husband Bart Platteau over the past 18 years, she has collaborated with a wide range of musicians in the US and Europe. Her sextet has performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and numerous venues in Chicago, Detroit, Paris, Amsterdam, and New York. In 2010 Figarova and Platteau moved to New York permanently to perform music.
