On Friday, May 31st, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome trumpeter Dave Douglas and his quintet as they celebrate the release of Time Travel (Greenleaf Music) the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2012 release Be Still. His quintet features saxophonist Jon Irabagon, pianist Matt Mitchell, bassist Chris Tordini, and drummer Rudy Royston.
Douglas has been praised for having an "all-encompassing aesthetic, revealing a broad capacity for expressionism" (Troy Collins, All About Jazz). "His candid, direct, but technically dazzling trumpet manner is the same as it ever was" (Something Else, S. Victor Aaron) and he pays "scrupulous attention to harmony and rhythm while still allowing for maximum improvisational freedom" (Jason Bivins, Dusted).
He has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award and two Grammy nominations. Douglas has developed his work for several unique ensembles with whom he’s currently active, including his new quintet, electric sextet Keystone, Brass Ecstasy, and Sound Prints Quintet, co-led with Joe Lovano. His new quintet released its debut recording, Be Still, in September 2012 with singer Aoife O’Donovan, the first time Douglas has featured a vocalist on a recording. Since 2005, Douglas has operated his own record label, Greenleaf Music, releasing his own recordings as well as albums by other artists in the jazz idiom.
