On Friday, May 3rd, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome pianist Craig Taborn in his first performance as a leader at Firehouse 12. His trio featuring bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver will be celebrating the release the their new album Chants (ECM Records) which was recorded in July 2012. The album is the culmination of 8 years of work as Taborn writing for and performing with this group during that time but never recorded.
Taborn has been called "one of the visionaries of the current wave" by DownBeat magazine and "a master of many different styles. . .his many improvisational guises can be heard on this very intriguing release" (Greg Barbrick, BlogCritics.org). John Kelman of All About Jazz wrote that Taborn's solo album Avenging Angel is "a masterpiece of invention and evocation that places Taborn squarely amongst those other esteemed pianists who've contributed to ECM's pantheon of significant solo recordings."
Taborn initially became known as a member of saxophonist James Carter's group in the mid 1990s. Taborn recorded his debut album in 1994 and graduated from the University of Michigan the following year. Over the past two decades, Taborn has worked with artists like Roscoe Mitchell, Mat Maneri, Dave Binney, Adam Rogers, Tim Berne, and Dave Holland. Taborn's previous album Avenging Angel was released in 2011 on ECM Records.
