On Friday, April 5th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome back percussionist Tomas Fujiwara and his group, The Hook Up featuring Mary Halvorson, Brian Settles, Jonathan Finlayson, and Adam Hopkins. The group will be premiering a new book of compositions for this performance at Firehouse 12. These new compositions will appear on The Hook Up's third album, to be released in 2014.
Fujiwara "works with rhythm as a pliable substance, solid but ever shifting. His style is forward-driving but rarely blunt or aggressive, and never random. . .[his] conception of the drum set [is] as a full-canvas instrument, almost orchestral in its scope" (Nate Chinen, New York Times). Fujiwara's "compositional subtlety brims with lyric detail and supple imagination, revealing an artist whose urbane writing is equal to his impressively nuanced drumming" (Troy Collins, Point of Departure).
Tomas Fujiwara was born and raised in Boston, MA, where he studied with legendary drummer and teacher Alan Dawson for eight years before moving to New York at the age of 17. He is currently a member of ensembles led by Taylor Ho Bynum, Mary Halvorson, Matana Roberts, Mike Reed, Josh Sinton and others in addition to projects with artists such as Anthony Braxton, Roswell Rudd, Tim Berne, Marty Ehrlich, and Michael Formanek.
