On Friday, March 22nd, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present pianist Matthew Shipp and his trio featuring bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Whit Dickey. The last time Shipp performed at Firehouse 12 was in a 2006 solo concert. This marks the first time Shipp has brought his flagship ensemble to Firehouse 12.

Shipp's trio is known for their "richly rewarding, high energy sets which [weave] obliquely in and out of the standards repertoire" (Geoff Winston, London Jazz Blogspot). Shipp "sprints, cuts, and spins . . . [b]locking out heavy chords, rippling through insanely complex but cleanly articulated runs" (DR Absolute Sound). John Sharpe of All About Jazz wrote "the rapturous applause from the standing room only crowd made one thing clear: piano trios don't come any better than this."

Shipp has been active in the New York City music scene since the mid-80s. He has performed with many leading figures in music including the late David S. Ware and Roscoe Mitchell. In addition to his own work as a bandleader he also curates the "Blue Series" for record label Thirsty Ear. His most recent recording The Art of the Improviser was released in 2011 on Thirsty Ear.
