The New Haven Improvisers Collective returns to Firehouse12 with its annual showcase of new music. This year’s edition celebrates the release of the new CD, Ground Waves, by Electric NHIC.

8:30pm Set: Guitar Trio E opens the show with a set of guitar music from the edge of the world. Electric Guitar tones shimmer like polished glass and then tear you up from the inside. Intertwining lines, sonic counterpoint and explorations with a sense of dynamics, space and fun. Three very different approaches to the guitar, one fascinating sound.

Guitar Trio E is: Jeff Cedrone, Chris Cretella, and Bob Gorry

10pm Set: Electric NHIC celebrates the release of the New CD, Ground Waves. Electric NHIC evolved from the high energy avant-funk of Mayhem Circus Electric. As MCE played at rock clubs, festivals, and new music venues in support of its CD, Lubricity, the music’s focus naturally expanded beyond the initial high energy stomp. New tunes crept in as the group took a broader view incorporating electronica, progressive rock, moody modal melody and laid back electric jazz. The Circus and the Mayhem became only part of the story so the band adopted the name Electric NHIC and vowed to follow where the music led. The new CD, Ground Waves, captures all of these elements in an exciting collection of new music from the laid back electric jazz of “For JZ” and the prog-tinged “Water on the Brain” to the mayhem inspired “Make them Circles Concentric”.

The group continues to evolve adding the magical chapman stick of Brett Bottomley on the low end and the insightful trumpet and electronics of Nick DiMaria up top. Come get the full treatment and find out where Electric NHIC is today.

Electric NHIC is: Brett Bottomley (Chapman Stick), Pete Brunelli (Electric Bass, electronics), Jeff Cedrone (Guitar, electronics), Nick DiMaria (Trumpet, electroncis), Bob Gorry (Guitar), Paul McGuire (Soprano & Alto Saxophone), Pete Riccio (Drums/Percussion).

The New Haven Improvisers Collective is a far-reaching collective of creative musicians forming into a particular group to play particular music in a particular moment. NHIC holds monthly workshops, sponsors performances of various ad-hoc combinations of NHIC members and hosts visiting jazz and new music ensembles. A growing number of musicians and composers pass through the group bringing insights and enthusiasm from distant corners of the music world. Monthly open workshops welcome new members, new instruments and new ideas. The annual visit to Firehouse 12 showcases a core of the group, presents new works, and holds a few surprises.
