On Friday, October 26th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present pianist Fred Hersch and his trio featuring Johannes Weidenmueller and Eric McPherson as they celebrate the release of their new album Alive at the Vanguard (Palmetto Records). The trio excels at reinterpreting the classics of the jazz repertoire in a modern context.

Hersch has been called "the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade" (Tad Hendrikson, Vanity Fair) and "a modern master" (Ted Panken, Downbeat). Will Friedwald of the Wall Street Journal wrote "he's as cutting-edge as any of the younger lions yet as true to the melody and bop tradition as any of the elder statesmen" while Nate Chinen of The New York Times calls Hersch "a pianist, composer and conceptualist of rare imaginative power."

Hersch has performed as a sideman to jazz legends including Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, and Stan Getz. He has written numerous original compositions in addition to performing classics of the jazz repertoire. His awards include a 2003 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for composition, two Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance and a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition. He has appeared on over one hundred recordings, including more than two-dozen albums as a band leader or solo pianist.
