On Friday, October 12th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present pianist Dan Tepfer and his trio featuring Joe Sanders on bass and Henry Cole on drums. The trio performs Tepfer's original compositions and modern interpretations of jazz standards that feature Tepfer's unique harmonic sense and rhythmic urgency. The trio's first record Five Pedals Deep (Sunnyside Records) was released in 2010.
Tepfer's playing has been called "elegant, thoughtful, and thrilling" (Eric Benson, New York Magazine). His "jazz roots show through in the crisp articulation and rhythmic clarity . . . glass-attack and, above all, in his supple approach to time" (Corinna Da Fonseca-Wollheim, Wall Street Journal). His solo piano record Goldberg Variations/Variations (Sunnyside Records) was called "a fascinating and engrossing listen" (Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen) and "one of the more audacious, accomplished recordings of 2011" (Ted Panken, Downbeat).
Born to American parents in Paris, France in 1982, Dan began classical piano studies at age six at the Paris Conservatoire Paul Dukas. He took a somewhat circuitous route to a jazz career, earning a bachelors degree in astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. After graduating in 2005 from Boston’s New England Conservatory, where he completed his masters under the guidance of Danilo Perez, Dan moved to New York and quickly became an in-demand player and composer. Dan performs in solo concerts, with his trio, and also has the privilege of performing with jazz luminary Lee Konitz as a duo.
