On Friday, October 5th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present vibraphonist Tyler Blanton and his group featuring saxophonist Joel Frahm, bassist Dan Loomis, and drummer Jared Schonig. The group performs Blanton's original compositions which engage and pay tribute to the classic be-bop tradition and sound with the vibraphone front and center.
Blanton has been called "a young vibraphonist with strong lyrical footing" (Nate Chinen, The New York Times) whose "writing is intricate, but accessible. Lyricism and beauty are at the heart of things, but these guys can swing with authority as well" (George Fendel, Jazzscene). Jazz Inside NY raved "Blanton has an assertively bright, crystalline tone and values gregarious swing and melodiousness highly."
Raised in Ojai, California, Blanton moved to New York City in 2007 and has since established himself on the New York City jazz scene. He has performed and recorded with musicians like saxophonists Donny McCaslin, Joel Frahm, Seamus Blake, Noah Preminger and Adam Kolker, bassists Dan Loomis, Matt Clohesy, Aidan Carroll, Sam Minaie and Alexis Cuadrado, and drummers Matt Wilson, Richie Barshay, Jared Schonig, Mark Ferber, Ference Nemeth, Nate Wood, and Tommy Crane, amongst others. Blanton's debut album Botanic was released in 2010.
