On Friday, September 28th, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present pianist/keyboardist Jamie Saft and his New Zion Trio featuring Jonathan Moran on bass and Craig Santiago on drums. The New Zion Trio pays tribute to Roots Reggae, dub, and trance music. Their debut release Fight Against Babylon (Veal Records) was released late last year.
Critics have called Fight Against Babylon "a remarkable recording [that] makes for a beautiful listen" (Gapplegate Music Review) and "succeeds in blowing fresh winds in the traditional piano trio with dub aesthetics" (Eyal Hareuveni, All About Jazz). The music is "explicitly derived from Jamaican dub music, tuned into notions of trancelike repetition" (Nate Chinen, The New York Times). The Village Voice's music critic Jim Macnie wrote "through warm clusters of keys, [Saft] weaves a rich fabric of sound."
Jamie Saft is a native of Queens, New York, was raised in Connecticut and attended Boston's New England Conservatory. Since returning to New York in 1993, Saft's stylistic versatility, multi-instrumentalist capabilities, and production skills have been featured with Bobby Previte, John Zorn, the B-52's, Laurie Anderson, The Beastie Boys, Jerry Granelli, Dave Douglas, among others. Saft has released two solo records on Tzadik entitled Breadcrumb Sins and Sovlanut. Saft also moonlights as a producer and studio engineer at his studio Frank Booth.
