On December 30, 2011, The Julian Lage Trio with Larry Grenadier and Eric Harland will perform for the first time together at Firehouse 12. The trio has been selected to perform as part of NPR's 2011 "Toast of the Nation," a live broadcast that will take place at the Berklee College of Music on December 31, 2011. Hailed by All About Jazz as "a giant in the making," guitarist Julian Lage grew up in California and was the subject of an Academy Award-nominated documentary, Jules at Eight. He gained pivotal early exposure with legendary vibraphonist Gary Burton, recording and touring with Burton on three projects: Generations (2004), Next Generation (2005), and Common Ground (2011). As the leader of the Julian Lage Group, Julian has released two albums of his own including the Grammy Nominated Sounding Point (2009) as well as his most recent release, Gladwell (2011). The Julian Lage Group have previously performed at Firehouse 12. Larry Grenadier is currently one of the most sought after bass players on the scene today. He focuses much of his touring time playing with Brad Mehldau's trio which, since 2004, has included drummer Jeff Ballard. He is also a part of the collaborative trio FLY, which includes drummer Jeff Ballard and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. In 2011, Larry toured extensively with Pat Metheny, with whom he has previously recorded two albums. In 2008, Eric Harland was awarded first place in the "Rising Star Drums" by Downbeat Magazine's Critics Poll Awards. Eric has recorded over 45 recordings with various artists. He has toured with the late, great Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, Charles Lloyd, Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, John Patitucci and Zakir Hussain. Eric is also part of the SF Jazz Collective, a new 8 piece cutting edge group brainstormed by Joshua Redman and featuring members like Bobby Hutchinson, Nicholas Payton, Miguel Zenon and more. In 2010 Eric released his debut recording as a leader, "Voyager, Live by Night," which featured Julian Lage on guitar.
