An in-demand sideman and ubiquitous figure on New York's Downtown scene, Rainey is celebrating the release of his first album as a leader, Pool School (Clean Feed). Joining him on the record and at this concert will be co-conspirators Mary Halvorson (guitar) and Ingrid Laubrock (saxophone), both major new voices on their respective instruments.
Writing for Jazz Times, Bill Milkowski comments, "there is some magic happening here - a beautiful contrast between Zen-like calm and alarming bombast that makes Pool School a must hear." Chris May of All About Jazz says, "Pool School has a high ratio of sustained, unscripted, collective invention. But variety of atmosphere and form is a hallmark of the set. The 12 tracks move adroitly between the composed and the improvised, the inside and the outside, the sun lounger and the deep end. It's often impossible to tell where the one starts and the other begins."
