While his 2008 Firehouse 12 appearance showcased his commanding, muscular tenor playing in the stripped down context of a trio, this show will feature an all-star quartet, including the great Uri Caine on piano, Scott Colley (also presenting one of his own groups later in the 2011 Spring Jazz Series) on bass, and Jonathan Blake on drums. The new music presents McCaslin's angular post-bop, ethereal original ballads and thickly textured, polyphonic funk.
"Donny McCaslin has long been one of the under-sung superstars of the modern tenor saxophone" writes Warren Allen in his All About Jazz review "Perpetual Motion". He continues, "[d]rawing off the best of the 21st century's jazz, funk and rock fusion, 'Perpetual Motion' demonstrates the sheer power of McCaslin as a player, and the individuality of his musical vision." In Jazz Times, Chris DiGirolamo comments, "[t]he man is a tenor saxophone-blowing force of nature...he has proved the possibility of Perpetual Motion - the idea that a mechanism can produce more energy than it consumes in the process."
Winner of Downbeat's 2008, 2009, and 2010 Rising Star on the Tenor Saxophone, McCaslin's resume as a sideman reads like a who's who in the past decade of jazz: Pat Metheny, Dave Douglas, Maria Schneider, Danilo Perez, Tom Harrell, Gary Burton, Brian Blade, Dave Binney, and more. The broad stylistic variety amongst his employers reflects McCaslin's deep, genre-transcending musicality. This is not a show to be missed!
